What is an X-ray and what conditions does it diagnose?

X‑rays use a small dose of ionising radiation to produce images of bones and joints. They are commonly used to:

• Detect fractures, stress injuries and other bone injuries
• Assess joint damage, arthritis wear and tear and degenerative conditions
• Identify signs of inflammation, infection or bone abnormalities
• Monitor the healing of fractures and assess the progress of certain musculoskeletal conditions
• Support the diagnosis of ongoing pain, swelling or reduced joint movement

What to expect

An X-ray is non-invasive and usually takes only a few minutes. Our experienced radiographers will ensure you are comfortable throughout the examination and will explain what to expect before your X-ray begins.

Our digital X-ray system captures high-quality digital images quickly, allowing images to be reviewed and reported efficiently. This provides your clinician with the information needed to discuss the most appropriate next steps in your treatment or management plan.

Before your appointment

If there is any possibility that you may be pregnant, please inform the radiographer before your examination so that appropriate precautions can be taken. Depending on the area being examined, you may also be asked to remove jewellery or clothing containing metal.
