Joint injections

Helping you manage joint pain and improve mobility

Joint pain can affect your ability to stay active, work comfortably, and enjoy everyday activities. To help manage joint pain and improve mobility, joint injections may be used to relieve painful joints following injury or in conditions such as arthritis. They can also help treat painful tendons and inflammation around affected joints, reducing pain and improving movement.

At the OrthTeam Centre we provide thorough assessments to understand the cause of your pain and discuss whether a joint injection is an appropriate option for you.

What are joint injections?

Joint injections involve delivering medication directly into or around a joint. They are commonly used to help manage pain and inflammation in certain musculoskeletal conditions.

They may be considered for a range of joints, including:

  • Hip
  • Knee
  • Shoulder
  • Elbow
  • Foot and ankle
  • Hand and wrist
  • Spine

Your consultant will assess your symptoms, diagnosis and medical history before recommending any treatment.

To help ensure an accurate diagnosis and determine the most appropriate treatment, they may recommend further imaging or investigations, such as:

Types of injections and procedures we may offer

Depending on your condition and assessment, the following treatment options may be considered:

  • Corticosteroid injections - used to help reduce inflammation and relieve pain in affected joints or soft tissues
  • PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) injections - uses components of your own blood to support tissue healing in selected conditions
  • Viscosupplementation - hyaluronic acid injections that may help improve joint lubrication, commonly used in osteoarthritis
  • Ultrasound-guided injections - imaging may be used to improve accuracy and ensure precise placement of the injection
  • Hydrodilatation (shoulder) - a procedure used in some cases of frozen shoulder to help improve shoulder movement by gently stretching the joint capsule

What to expect

If a joint injection is recommended, your consultant will explain:

  • What the procedure involves
  • Potential benefits and risks
  • Possible side effects
  • Aftercare advice and recovery expectations

The procedure itself is usually quick, often taking around 10–20 minutes, although this may vary depending on the joint being treated and whether ultrasound guidance is used.

Are joint injections right for me?

Joint injections are not suitable for everyone and are typically considered when other treatments, such as physiotherapy or medication have not provided sufficient relief. A full clinical assessment is required to determine the most appropriate care for your individual needs.
