Ultrasound

At the OrthTeam Centre we offer a comprehensive ultrasound service, with four dedicated ultrasound rooms supporting both diagnostic imaging and ultrasound-guided procedures. Our experienced clinicians use high-quality ultrasound equipment to assess a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions.

What is an ultrasound and what conditions does it diagnose?

Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and other soft tissues. It is a non-invasive imaging technique that does not use ionising radiation.

Ultrasound is commonly used to:

  • Diagnose muscle, tendon and ligament injuries
  • Identify fluid, swelling or bleeding within joints and soft tissues
  • Assess tendon tears, strains and other soft tissue abnormalities
  • Evaluate inflammation associated with musculoskeletal conditions
  • Assess dynamic movement during examination, allowing structures to be viewed while they are moving
  • Guide image injections

What to expect

An ultrasound examination is generally quick and non-invasive. During the scan, a small handheld probe is moved over the skin using a water-based gel to produce real-time images of the area being examined.

As ultrasound provides live imaging, this allows your clinician to assess structures during movement and compare the images with your symptoms. Images can be reviewed immediately to support diagnosis and help inform your treatment plan.

Before your appointment

Depending on the area being examined, you may be asked to wear loose, comfortable clothing or change into a gown to allow easy access to the area being scanned.
