I specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of musculoskeletal and sports injury. I regularly see patients and athletes with bone stress, ligament, meniscal injuries, tendon, back and joint pain in particular. I have a special interest in sports related concussion, and see sportspeople following acute concussive events to guide them through rehabilitation, and also those with persisting concussive symptoms. Frequently, I see patients suffering from medical problems related to exercise including fatigue, underperformance and breathing issues, such as exercise induced asthma. I regularly perform diagnostic ultrasound in clinic to aid diagnosis and explanation of a condition, plus perform ultrasound guided injections to help aid rehabilitation.
I am Sports Medicine Lead at the UK Sports Institute, based in Manchester. I have provided medical care and support to British athletes through multiple Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games – including working at the Rio Paralympics in 2016, and Commonwealth Games in 2014 and 2022. I am a Team Sports Physician for EF Education First-EasyPost professional cycling team; providing medical care overseas at UCI World tour races, including the Tour de France (2021, 2023), Giro d’Italia (2020, 2021 and 2022) and Vuelta a Espana (2023).
My previous positions include the Chief Medical Officer role at England Netball from 2016-2022, British Para-Swimming and England Squash. I have also worked as a team doctor in Premiership football and professional rugby league.
My NHS practice is the Joint Health Integrated Musculoskeletal Service at Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust.
I have a particular interest in medical education, currently I am the Sport and Exercise Medicine Training Programme Director for the North West, and I completed a medical education fellowship during my own NHS training. I also greatly enjoy coaching and mentoring other healthcare professionals.
