The Comprehensive Nerve Service at the OrthTeam Centre

In the UK, it's estimated that 1 in 10 people aged 55 or over are affected by some degree of peripheral neuropathy or nerve damage.* A neurological condition or injury may affect the brain, spinal cord or peripheral nerves in the arms and legs.

At the OrthTeam Centre, our experts treat every condition that could affect your nervous system. OrthTeam nerve experts have decades of combined experience looking after patients who suffer from a wide variety of conditions, and they work together to provide an integrated approach, which ensures high quality personalised care for each and every person. Our clinicians are also supported by a wider team of specialists including neurophysiologists, neuroradiologists and physiotherapists.

OrthTeam nerve experts:

What are the potential symptoms of nerve damage?

  • Numbness and tingling in the feet or hands
  • Loss of movement or function
  • Muscle weakness or wasting
  • Burning, stabbing or shooting pain in affected areas
  • Loss of balance and co-ordination

Diagnosis and Treatment

Treatment for nerve injury is time sensitive. The sooner a nerve injury is diagnosed, the better the chance of limiting the damage and preventing further complications. Your consultant will decide which test is most appropriate to diagnose your nerve injury and its underlying cause.

This may include:

  • Nerve conduction test (NCS)– where small metal wires called electrodes are placed on your skin which release tiny electric currents that stimulate your nerves; the speed and strength of the nerve signal is measured.
  • Electromyography (EMG)– where a small fine needle is inserted through your skin into your muscle and used to measure the electrical activity of your muscle.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) - MRIuses a magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed images of the area affected by nerve damage.
  • Ultrasound scan (USS) - a small device called an ultrasound probe is used, which gives off high-frequency sound waves.

Treatment will depend on the type and severity of the nerve injury. Your specialist will be able to advise on the best course of action for you.

We are recognised by all private medical insurers and you do not require a referral letter from your GP to see a consultant at the OrthTeam Centre. We advise that you check with your insurer regarding authorising your appointment.
